As a global technology leader, Qualcomm has the opportunity to model how best to protect our natural resources. Sustainability Matters and PlanetReuse worked closely with BNIM Architects and DPR Construction to provide Qualcomm solutions within the material reuse realm.
Originally the material specifications for the interior wood ceiling detail of the 5-story Qualcomm AY building was a manufactured core with wood veneer creating a prefabricated finished wood detail, all made from virgin materials.
Sustainability Matters proposed a material solution with U.S.-sourced, 100 percent reused solid walnut. The value of the aesthetics of the reused material far surpassed the prefabricated option, and added benefits included an increased lifespan and reduced maintenance — all for the same cost.
The results speak volumes. The potential for reuse of materials is vast and the Qualcomm AY building exemplifies not only the opportunity, but the economic and environmental vitality of material reuse.
